Half of the Liberated crew decided to spend
10 days at Sea View (outskirts of PE) to enjoy what the Sunshine coast
has to offer. We stayed in a freelancing writer’s house; his house is an
inspiring writers dream. The house is against a slope next to the sea
with a stream running over the rocks into the ocean. This destination
can make the hardest cynical heart warm.
The point of the article is to take your
board and explore the rest of your country, in this case particularly
the Sunshine coast. With no “big” parks left in the Cape Town region the
skateboard scene will for obvious reasons become stagnant. There isn’t
one ”skate shop” left in Bellville, previously there were 3 shops in a
km radius from each other, this is an indication of this phenomena.
Skateboarders should create an exploring notion towards skateboarding,
searching for spots in your city or travel to nearby towns; this is the
heart and soul of skateboarding.
Jbay is +- 700km from Cape Town and it is
worth every kilometers drive, famous for super tubes (a surf spot where
the Billabong Pro takes place in June/July). In Jbay you are greeted by
numerous factory shops, a laid-back attitude and friendly locals. There
is an Element park across from the Billabong factory shop; a nice small
setup. The park is next to a fun beach break, a skate and a cooling down
surf session goes down nicely. At the fountain mall they recently built
a bowl in the Quiksilver shop. The bowl is free to skate, flows nicely
and has a positive skate ethic, where people get stoked on each other’s
skating.
In PE there are numerous good streets spots begging for attention
for those willing to search for them or have the creativity to see the
potential. A warm up at Kings Beach and then a mission to inner city is a
day well spent.
In PE be on the lookout for car boot sales,
they sell everything you forgot you wanted. Stay away from the Open Sky
bar near See View and rent a longboard in Jbay if you haven’t surfed
before.
Stop being lazy, get your board and go.
Happy Holidays. ▲
