Interview with Wild Eastern Arches

How did Wild Eastern Arches form? Did you guys have any other musical projects before the band came together?
We all had various musical projects in the past covering a broad variety of genres. It took a good 2 years forming the band with the line-up we’re playing now. Most of us were friends beforehand which made it easy to spark the idea of starting a new project initially, but with band members coming and going, it has been a long and frustrating journey to get where we are now.

There aren’t many psychedelic bands in South Africa at the moment, are your influences mostly international and if so who would you recommend for those who find the genre appealing?
We are definitely influenced by international bands the most, but the amount of new bands
popping up in South Africa, has made it great being able to draw some inspiration locally as well.
Internationally, Night Beats, Black Angels, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Allah Las, UFO Club, Blue Angel Lounge. Locally, The Future Primitives, The Very Wicked, Bilderberg Motel, BEAST, Bateleur.

Why psychedelic rock, do you feel that it is a trendy revitalisation of 60’s music or an expressive music genre that has been neglected?
Psychedelic rock n roll was in a way a common ground for all our different backgrounds, a vehicle to carry all these different influences. Every musical genre is expressive in it’s own respectable way, and for us, we find it in what we play. It’s not something that has been neglected necessarily, musicians and bands have been around making ‘expressive music’ all along. Maybe people are just only starting to really pay attention now. Psychedelic music is very broad, and plenty of room for anyone to form their own perspective on it. It definitely isn’t restricted to 60’s music, but in a way revitalising the unconventional approach of the way music was made back then. Songs being journeys rather than 3 minutes of force feeding.

Liberated saw you play at Psych Night (Rocking The Daisies), what can you tell the readers about this night and how was your experience at Rocking The Daisies?
Psych Night is a collective that was started recently hosting events to try and support local psychedelic acts and educate people that aren’t familiar with the genre. People involved include Andre Leo (The Very Wicked), Simon Berndt (One Horse Town Illustration), Micah Donnoli (WEA), Mark Reitz (Photographer) and Raoul Goetze (WEA). Together with other bands such as Black Lung, Bilderberg Motel, The Future Primitives and a big group of friends who are as deep in it as the bands themselves. Psych Night was held at RTD unofficially seeing that 3 Psych bands played together, we couldn’t resist. Other than Psych Night, Rocking the Daisies was such a great festival to be apart of. Hopefully they will have us again next year!

Is there a creative process or technique to your song writing? And what do you want the listeners to experience from your songs?
Usually we just start playing, and 20 minutes later, we’ll have something to work with and put ‘structure’ to. Occasionally someone will have a rough idea to work from, but it ends up in a jam
anyways. Ben will write lyrics accordingly. If we can convey the feeling we get when playing in studio improvised and how we experience the music as a journey to listeners, we’ll be very happy.

What is the origin of the name “Wild Eastern Arches”? Is there any meaning behind the name?
The best explanation would be that the words have different meanings and connotations beyond the literal. The imagery in those words reflects how our music feels to us.

Having noticed your posters/artwork, who is the creative mind behind these designs?
Our drummer, Jack Walsh. His work can be seen here: http://cargocollective.com/jackwalsh

“Fever Dream” is combined well through the music and video concept. Are the eyes symbolic of different manners of perception? Who directed “Fever Dream” (the music video), off the EP entitled “Mountain”?
Not necessarily, but it can be interpreted in so many ways. The eye is such a strong visual element with so many connotations and symbolism. Giving the viewer a chance, almost a form of suspence and uncertainty about what to make of it. The right person to ask will be the director, Dirk Steenkamp and editor, Jack Walsh.

If you could have the perfect show locally and internationally who would you choose to perform with?
Locally, without a doubt our brother bands, The Very Wicked, Bilderberg Motel and The Future Primitives. But at the end of the day, the perfect show is what you make of it regardless who you play with. It’s always so great to perform live with the right sound setup of course.
Internationally, Black Angels and BRMC.

Psychedelic rock is for obvious reasons related to psychedelic drugs. What is your opinion on this relation? Do you think substances enhance musical creativity and a bigger conceptual framework of reality?
Each to their own. For some it definitely enhances the experience of feeling the music or the creative process of writing and at the same time some of us don’t do drugs. Guess it also depends on how much you take, you still want to keep some sort of sanity while writing. Or even remember what you played. It really depends on the individual.

What makes you feel Liberated?
More reverb.
